Educate Uganda was founded in 2006 and became a non profit organization in February 2007.
Our original focus was to help orphaned children of Uganda with their fees for primary school. It did not take long for us to realize that sending the children to school was important but the schools needed urgent assistance as well. For more information on our programs, click on one of the tabs above.
Educate Uganda is proud to be able to state that every penny you donate is spent directly on the children of Uganda or for the school improvements designated. All administrative costs associated with running Educate Uganda have either been donated specifically for that cause or are being paid for by members of the board of directors. There are no salaries, fees, stipends etc., paid to any of the board members responsible for Educate Uganda.
In the Fall of 2006, we began a sponsorship program to help orphaned children in the area of Nkokonjeru, Uganda. This program allows the orphaned child to attend school and obtain an education. Each year, Educate Uganda volunteers from the United States travel to Uganda in order to visit our 28 primary school partners. While visiting each school, the attendance of sponsored students is verified, photos are taken of the current orphans, and new orphans are identified and registered.
Each year we have approximately 1,500 orphans who are sponsored by donors all across the United States. Your $150/YEAR donation, provides the mandatory book fees, a school uniform and a meal each school day. For many of the children, this may be only their second set of clothes and quite often the only meal this child receives. As a sponsor, you receive a 4×6 photo of the child that you are supporting, any available information on the child, and the joy of knowing that you are truly making a difference in the life of that child!
In January 2014, a dream came true for Educate Uganda and the primary students we support. Educate Uganda received a private donation which allowed 50 students completing primary 7 to continue their education and attend a private secondary school. Through this generous donation and others who have helped champion this cause, Educate Uganda is currently assisting 176 students with their secondary school fees.
Secondary school fees for these private boarding schools is $1,000 per student for each of the six years they attend. The students selected to attend secondary school are high performers at their primary schools and scored well on the Ugandan National Leaving Exam given to all qualifying primary 7 students.
You can make a donation to the Secondary Program for any amount and we will combine your gift with others to enable students completing primary 7 in December to continue their education. If you would like to sponsor a child yourself, please contact Karen at Karen@educateuganda.org for more details.
Each year Educate Uganda board members and volunteers visit schools in the Nkokonjeru area and see first hand the dilapidated school buildings, inadequate classroom space, unsanitary latrines, and the need for educational materials. At Educate Uganda we understand that simply paying for the children to attend school is not enough.
There are 28 different schools that have orphans participating in the Educate Uganda Sponsorship Program (see Sponsorship Program). Every trip to Uganda includes conducting an analysis of each school to determine their specific needs. These needs include the most basic objectives: school classrooms, staff housing, rain catching systems, latrines, teaching materials, desks and chalkboards.
When you donate to the School Improvement Program, your donation can be directed to school supplies for the students, the current construction project or to teaching materials for the teachers. Simply designate how you would like us to utilize your donation.
